Matthew – Qualified Joiner

My Dad was a joiner so I always grew up wanting to follow in his footsteps. When I was 15, I did 6 months voluntary work with a social housing provider, which was a great step into the trade, especially as they bought me my first set of tools. Whilst I was there I was introduced to Jamieson Contracting as they were a contractor for the social housing provider at the time. I asked them about any opportunities to work for them and during 2007 I was lucky enough to be taken on as an apprentice joiner.

I completed a 3 year course at College and qualified in 2010. Jamieson’s employed me at the start of my career and 9 years later I am still with them. No two days are the same, it’s always exciting. I’ve worked on all sorts of projects from large scale office renovations, veterinary surgeries to bus stations where I’ve done first fix, 2nd fix and final fix projects. I hope in the future I will be managing a team of joiners for the company.

Kenny – Apprentice Joiner

When I was 15 I chose to do Site Joinery as a vocational option at school and at the same time joined Jamieson Contracting as an apprentice joiner. I spent my time working for 3 days learning my trade, studying for 1 day at College and 1 day at school. After 4 years I am due to finish my site joinery course this summer and am hoping to continue on to complete my Level 3 in September.

My hard work has paid off so far as I’m one of only two joiners from my course to have been picked to compete in the North West Skill Build, where I will have a day to complete a joinery project and be judged against my peers across the North West. Fingers crossed I can go all the way! I really enjoy working at Jamieson’s as I get to work across all sorts of projects so I’m learning all the time. In the future I hope to go on to become a site foreman.

 Craig Stone – Site Manager

Before joining the Company I’d tried a few different jobs, mainly working in a call centre and I’d had a bit of time working abroad as a barman. I joined Jamieson Contracting in 2010 and haven’t looked back ever since. I initially started out as a labourer and after about 18 months of learning the trade, the Directors put me onto a course at Manchester College to complete my General Construction Operative NVQ. I won Apprentice of the Year whilst I was there, which was such a great accolade and a reward for all the hard work I put in.

Since then I’ve worked my way up to Site Manager and am already planning my next step with the business as I hope to complete an NVQ Level 6 in Site Management, one day hoping to look after the big contracts as Project Manager. I’ve worked across every type of project from social housing, demolition, civils works; there’s been so much variation. I absolutely love my job and working for the people in the Jamieson’s business who have supported, developed and helped build my confidence in the last 5 years.
